PROCESS OF DIGESTION IN INSECTS

The process of digestion in case of insects is carried out in 5 steps.Ingestion,Transportation,Digestion,Absorption,Egestion.

INGESTION

This actually is the intake of food materials by the insects. The process of digestion occurs here but its only partial. In case of some other insects digestion is also carried out outside of the intestine by a process called extra intestinal or extra oral digestion.

TRANSPORTATION

Peristaltic activity is helpful in transportation of food materials inside the alimentary canal. The food material is carried out to crop from anterior opening through the oesophagus. The food material after reaching the crop enters the gizzard and then it is crushed or mechanically masticated into very minute particles with the help of denticles or cuticular teeths.

DIGESTION

The actual process of digestion occurs in midgut of the insects. The enzymes(https://agriculturalsecrets.blogspot.com/2020/05/enzymes-in-insects.html ) mentioned starts working here and the digestion is carried out.

ABSORBTION

The epithelial cells of the midgut abosorbs the essential nutrients from the food and the undigested food is then transported to hindgut.

EGESTION

The waste particles or undigested food is then discharged through the anus due to the action of anal muscles.

so these are the steps of digestion of insects described in short.https://agriculturalsecrets.blogspot.com/2020/05/digestive-system-of-insects-in-short.html
